Yesterday, my wife Peggy and I participated in a strike with local rural nurses and the Michigan Nurses Association in Sault Ste. Marie. They are protesting for equal pay to their regional colleagues and safe staffing levels.

My mother, sister, and numerous family members are all union nurses, not to mention the thousands of staff members I've worked with over the years.

I know it first hand - their dedication and hard work are crucial in ensuring positive patient outcomes and improving the health of our communities.

My team marched the entire afternoon. Peggy and I visited with a coffee cake, a personal donation and made a point to thank and talk to every picketer to gain a better perspective on their issues.

Rural healthcare is difficult. We need everyone to get on board to save it. I will always support the fight for essential human infrastructure like medical care and labor reform.

I'm hoping for a "win-win-win" solution for our nurses, rural hospitals, and our communities at-large.

It was an honor to stand shoulder to shoulder with MNA, Steelworkers, other unions, and our AFL-CIO Michigan president in solidarity.

Our rural communities depend on how well we care for our essential workers, and I will always show up to demand that we put hardworking people before profit.
