New Iran Sanctions

The United States plans to impose new sanctions on Iran in the coming days to punish it for the attacks on Israel over the weekend, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said today, as the NYT reports.

Consequences for Iran

Israel’s military chief said “Iran will face the consequences for its actions,” without providing further details, as Israel weighs its response to Iran’s unprecedented attack. The Biden administration said the United States would not participate in any Israeli reprisal, while world leaders urged Israel to exercise restraint to avoid a wider war, as The Washington Post reports.

Powell Dials Back Expectations

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said firm inflation during the first quarter had introduced new uncertainty over whether the central bank would be able to lower interest rates this year without signs of an economic slowdown, as the WSJ reports.
