Francis Scott Key Bridge Update:

Following the sudden collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge, my message has been clear—we must focus our efforts on recovering the victims, bringing closure to those who lost loved ones, and ensuring that the American taxpayer is not held responsible for costs that any negligent, foreign owned shipping company should pay. This past week, bipartisan and bicameral legislation was introduced to ensure that all costs related to the replacement of the Key Bridge are 100% recoverable by the federal government. The bill also ensures that if any foreign-owned shipping company is found negligent, the federal government will be able to recover damages to repay the American taxpayer. This legislation is a step in the right direction and will provide Maryland with the resources necessary to reopen the channel, rebuild the bridge, and hold any party responsible for reimbursing the federal government if found negligent.

Questioning The Education Secretary About Biological Men Playing in Women's Sports:

I also questioned Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona whose department has enabled biological men to compete in women's sports. I started by asking the Secretary whether he would agree that biological women are different than biological men. Secretary Cardona was unable to respond to such this simple question. Watch it for yourself here. 

Despite pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into our public education system, our school systems are in decline due to years of ineffective federal, state, union, and administrative policy. The U.S. Department of Education has put in place rules that restrict the Charter School Program and add bureaucratic hurdles for charter schools and families alike. I questioned the Secretary on this issue is as well.

Recently, we have witnessed a concerning wave of anti-Semitism on our college campuses across the country. Recently, University of Maryland Baltimore County's Student Government Association passed a resolution calling for the publicly run University of Maryland to engage in the Divest, Boycott, Sanction (DBS) movement against the State of Israel. Unfortunately, the Department of Education does not hold universities that fail to protect their Jewish students accountable. It is my belief that the Department of Education should revoke federal funding from universities allowing anti-Semitism on their campuses. 

FISA Reauthorization: 

This past week, the House also voted to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). As you may know, I strongly believe that any intelligence agency should be required to obtain a court-ordered warrant if the information they are collecting involves U.S. citizens who are protected by the fourth amendment. While I supported House leadership’s decision to change the sunset provision of the FISA reauthorization so that it will expire in two years, hopefully giving a Trump administration the opportunity to fully reform it, I could not in good conscience vote in favor of the final bill which did not include a key amendment to require our weaponized intelligence agencies to get a warrant before searching the private data of American citizens.
