Hello Friend,

I hope you and your family or friends are doing well, staying home, and staying safe. It’s been a busy, hectic, and productive week for us! There were some incredible digital events and continued work on our Resource Guide.

Social distancing has given our communications and digital work new meaning. I would like to personally invite you to take another look at our Resource Guide (also available in Spanish) which has been continually updated by our staff and partners to reflect new programs, resources, and outlets that might be useful for you or someone you know. New to our guide recently:

  • Senator Rosen’s Resource Guide
  • Senator Cortez Masto’s Resource Guide
  • DETR FAQ video guide to unemployment insurance applications

Wednesday, April 1st was national Census Day. In partnership with the Nevadans Count coalition, we hosted a Census Day Livestream on Facebook that included local leaders and elected officials. This was an all day call to action to complete the 2020 Census. If you have not filled out your Census don’t worry there is still time to self report. Visit NevadansCount.org to learn how to fill out the census today!

We’ve also been diligently working with the Governor’s office and leaders across our state to make sure Nevadans get the relief and assistance they need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a quick recap with some helpful tips:

  • Governor Sisolak issued a “Stay at Home” order starting at midnight April 1st through April 30th, meaning nonessential businesses will remain closed.
  • The National Guard is activated and ready to assist with the COVID-19.
  • The Governor also ordered a moratorium on all evictions, late fees, or other penalties from landlords or mortgage companies. Contact your landlords or lender to see what options you have. If a landlord is threatening to evict you, contact Attorney General Ford’s office immediately at 888-434-9989 or at ag.nv.gov.
  • Federally backed student loans were suspended until September 30th, 2020. This means payments have stopped. Interest will not be accruing during this time. Turn off any auto-pay you have and contact your employer’s HR if necessary to turn off any garnishments of your paycheck.
  • 1099 employees can get relief soon due to the CARES Act that will make them eligible for unemployment benefits. More information can be found https://battlebornprogress.actionkit.com/go/79983?t=21&akid=48182%2E50184%2E2pT39p(Coronavirus)_Information_for_Claimants_and_Employers">here. Funds will not be made available immediately but folks are encouraged to check with The Department of Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) regularly for updates.
  • The CARES Act provided expansions to paid sick leave & family medical leave for employees impacted by COVID19

To delve deeper into some of these topics, we held a Facebook Live TownHall with State Treasurer Zach Conine. The Treasurer talked about relief and resources available for homeowners, student loan borrowers and renters. If you weren’t able to tune in, or want to share the information with a loved one, click here to watch the event in full! Should you need additional help with a homeowner or student loan issue, visit Nevadatreasurer.gov or contact Treasurer Conine’s office at [email protected]. For student loan questions, email [email protected]

Nevadans are tough, and by continuing to follow the public health guidelines set by the Governor and staying home for Nevada, we will recover once again. For now, use these resources and don’t be afraid to ask for help or assistance from the agencies, nonprofits, and elected offices helping our community sustain and heal. We are here to help you so please reach out to our team if you have questions or need guidance.

Together we are #NevadaStrong,

Amber Falgout

Northern Nevada Manager
