[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy
Huge news: President Biden just took action to address the “gun show loophole.”
This action was made possible by the 2002 gun safety bill which I wrote. That bill gave the President the power to require that thousands of unlicensed gun sellers start performing background checks.
There are more than 20,000 unlicensed gun dealers facilitating tens of thousands of gun sales annually at gun shows, online, and from their homes — all without a background check. It is absurd.
Today’s action will end that — requiring them to get licensed and perform background checks.
As Joe Biden would say, this is a BFD. It will save lives.
This is our movement’s victory. This change is a result of the 2022 gun bill that empowered the president to require more gun sellers to conduct background checks regardless of venue.
It would not have happened without our years of organizing and demanding that Congress do something. This is your victory. Thank you for everything you’ve done to support our movement and make it happen.
This year, we have to finish the job. There is more action we must take to get universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and keep our families safe. The alternative will be Trump and Republicans rolling back our progress to flood our communities with more guns.
We’ve had massive victories these past three years. The tide is turning where our movement finally rivals the gun lobby’s power. If you’re with me in this, I know this will be just the start.
Every best wish,
Chris Murphy
Chris is up for reelection in 2024, and he is counting on people like you to power our grassroots campaign. Small-dollar donations help Chris keep his time fundraising to a minimum so he can focus on the work we expect him to do.
If you can afford it, please consider making a donation today. It would mean a lot to Chris. Every dollar will go directly toward holding this seat and stopping Republicans from taking back the Senate and White House.
