John,
On day one of his election interference hush money trial, Donald Trump apparently fell asleep – showing just how unserious he is about the charges he’s facing. [1]
But you know who is taking this trial seriously? The public servants working this case.
Today, on day two of the trial, Trump has continued breaking his gag order by mercilessly attacking the judge, public servants, and witnesses involved in this case – and now prosecutors are holding him accountable with fines or even jail time for his actions. [2]
I’m glad the public servants working on this case are holding Trump accountable to the rule of law – but we must immediately prepare for yet another onslaught of disinformation and even potential threats from Trump’s backers who believe the rules don’t apply to him. I hope we can count on you to speak up.
Add Your Name: Thank the public servants working on this case for holding Trump accountable – and urge them to hold firm against intimidation and disinformation from Trump and his supporters.
In 2018, Common Cause filed campaign finance complaints with the Department of Justice and the Federal Election Commission urging them to investigate the $130,000 paid to Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about her relationship with Donald Trump so that the scandal would not influence the 2016 presidential election. [3]
During the investigation that followed, Trump’s personal lawyer and “fixer,” Michael Cohen, admitted to paying off Daniels on Donald Trump’s behalf – ultimately receiving a sentence of three years in federal prison and a $50,000 fine for multiple charges.
And last year, a Manhattan grand jury found probable cause to indict Trump himself for keeping the American people in the dark about payments that should have been disclosed under the law.
This investigation has been six long years in the making. Voters deserve an answer – and we can’t allow Trump to delay and bully his way out of accountability any longer.
Sign the petition to show your support for holding Trump accountable – and to encourage the brave civil servants working on this case to hold firm against extreme right-wing disinformation.
I’m glad to have you with us on the side of truth and transparency.
Thanks for all you do,
Aaron Scherb, Senior Director of Legislative Affairs
and the team at Common Cause
