Andrew Gounardes: Democrat For New York

Friend,

I hope you are well and staying healthy.

Since our first case at the beginning of the month, New York City has become the epicenter of the novel coronavirus pandemic in the United States. As the infection rate grows, I have been humbled to see the bravery and strength of our EMS, FDNY, NYPD, doctors, nurses, and all other first responders and healthcare workers who are putting their lives on the line to save ours.

After weeks of waiting, the federal government finally invoked the Defense Production Act to help our healthcare workers battle this virus. While this will go a long way towards securing ventilators and will save lives, it will not protect those risking their lives for us from infection

Personal protective equipment (PPE) meant for one-time use for the safety of the ones wearing them are being re-used amongst our first responders and essential workforce.

The men and women of EMS, risking their lives every day, deserve the peace of mind afforded to other health care workers. That’s why along with my colleagues in government we successfully urged the Mayor and FDNY Commissioner to provide alternative housing options for them so that they don’t have to choose between sleeping in their car or risk infecting their loved ones.

Our government must not make the same mistakes we made after 9/11. We learned a lesson to never send first responders into harm's way without proper protection and a clear sense of the risks. An adequate supply of PPE will save thousands of lives of our first responders.

Friend, stay safe and I wish you health throughout this difficult time.

In service and solidarity,

Andrew

P.S. There are STILL a lot of community organizations that are helping out in vital ways, delivering meals, doing grocery runs, and making wellness calls to the vulnerable members of our community. If you are in a position to do so, supporting local organizations is one of the best ways you can contribute to the strength and health of our neighborhoods. We will do our best to highlight local groups supporting our community.
