The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate in the developed world. This rate is only rising, and it’s driven by far higher mortality rates among Black mothers.

Today, Black women are three to four times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related complications. These alarming statistics cannot be ignored.

That’s why in 2019, I co-founded the Black Maternal Health Caucus with one simple goal: save moms’ lives. Every day since, I’ve been working hard to do just that by passing comprehensive legislation, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act.

I’m proud that the Black Maternal Health Caucus secured substantial investments in this year's federal funding bill that will go a long way in supporting our mothers and addressing the maternal health crisis that our nation faces.

We’re making crucial progress, but our work is not yet complete.

The Momnibus will help to finally reverse the rising trend of maternal mortality, save the lives of moms, and close racial and ethnic disparities in maternal health outcomes. It includes 13 bills to address this crisis — the first piece of legislation, Protecting Moms Who Served Act, was signed into law and now, the Maternal Health for Veterans Act is on deck.

Congress must act now and pass the entire Momnibus and save moms’ lives. United, let’s make our best effort to deliver on moms’ urgent needs.
