Alissa Kamholz, a victim of sexual abuse, details being repeatedly re-traumatized and abandoned by a prison system that forced her to live with a man
Friend,
For California inmate Alissa Kamholz, everything changed after state lawmakers passed SB 132, a policy that allows biological male inmates to self-identify as a non-male “gender” and be transferred into women’s prisons.

When she was first sentenced to prison, Kamholz thought of prison as a “safe place.”

Kamholz told me that when she was young her mother remarried a member of the notorious Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang, and, as a wedding present, “my mother gave me to him,” she said. For 10 years, Kamholz said she was continually sexually violated by her stepfather and his biker buddies.

Kamholz was sentenced to 39 years to life under California’s three-strikes law ([link removed]'s%20three%2Dstrikes%20law%20under,violent%20felony%20or%20serious%20felony.&text=PC%20667%20also%20doubles%20the,violent%20felony%20or%20serious%20felony.) , and has since been incarcerated at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF).

On the path to rehabilitation, Kamholz thought that she was finally safe from abusive men, like those who had repeatedly traumatized her in her youth. This changed in November 2023, when she was forced to share her small living cell with a male inmate who identified as a woman, per the new law. This male happened to look like her former abusers and even told Kamholz that he was a regular at the clubhouse where Kamholz was repeatedly abused.

Instantly, Kamholz was re-traumatized.

In the newest episode of Cruel and Unusual Punishment: The Male Takeover of Female Prisons, Alissa Kamholz shares from prison the unimaginable horrors she and many other women are currently enduring under this discriminatory and dangerous new law.
