Like many of my colleagues, I called home to my family to tell them I loved them. We were all unsure what would happen next.

It was one of the darkest days in my life, and in American history. But the insurrectionists did not win. Even as rioters hunted them down, congressional leaders did everything they could to ensure that the election would be certified. They showed us what true patriotism looks like.

Folks, my MAGA opponent calls himself a patriot, too. He couldn’t be more wrong. Because, as we learned earlier this week, he’s an avowed insurrectionist who joined the thousands of armed, violent Trump supporters at the Capitol on January 6th.

Since running for the first time in 2018, I’ve faced several Republican opponents — many of whom I had fundamental disagreements with about moving New Jersey forward, defending our fundamental rights, lowering costs, and protecting our democracy.

In 2022, I even faced an opponent who denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

But I never, ever thought that I’d one day face an opponent who stood with the same people who attacked the Capitol, killed police officers, and threatened my life on January 6th.

To say that this is disqualifying for a congressional candidate is an understatement. But unfortunately, he is exactly the type of person Donald Trump would give his “total and complete” support to. And if he brings his campaign to New Jersey, as he’s promised to do, that means he could spend significant resources to unseat me.
