Dear Friend,

Today, April 15th, marks Tax Day. It is the official deadline to file your federal taxes. I want to remind everyone who has not yet filed their taxes to act today. You can either file your taxes with the IRS or request an extension.

Filing Your Taxes:

If you are prepared to file, you should review your documents thoroughly to ensure accuracy and completeness. Filing electronically is the quickest way to submit your returns and, if applicable, to receive your refund faster.

Requesting an Extension

If you need more time, you can request a filing extension by submitting Form 4868 through the IRS website or your tax preparation software. An extension can grant you additional time, until October 15th, to file. Please remember that an extension to file is not an extension to pay any taxes owed. If you owe taxes, it's important to pay in a timely manner to avoid possible penalties and interest.

Need help filing your Taxes?

Resources Available:

I understand that tax season can be stressful, which is why there are several resources available to assist you:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA): Free tax help for those who generally make $64,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers.

You can find more information about your local VITA site here or by dialing 2-1-1!

Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE): Offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older.

Tax relief for Victims of Severe Storms and Floods

You should know that tax relief is available for individuals and businesses in KentNewportProvidence and Washington counties that were affected by severe storms and flooding that began on December 17, 2023, and January 9, 2024.

Affected individuals and businesses have until July 15, 2024, to file returns and pay any taxes that were originally due during this period. The July 15, 2024, deadline applies to individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2024.
