He championed civil rights as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (which he helped found on this day in 1960!).

He led the March on Selma, bravely crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Bloody Sunday.

He served as a U.S. representative for more than 30 years, earning himself the nickname “the conscience of Congress.”
