All parents deserve to bask in the joy of bringing new life without fearing that their pregnancy will turn into tragedy. It’s no surprise that the lack of quality healthcare is one of the leading causes of negative maternal and infant health outcomes after childbirth.

Throughout our nation’s history, Black people have been denied the high-quality pregnancy care they need due to structural racism and implicit bias.

As a result, pregnancy-related complications are not just a risk for Black women — they’re a preventable yet life-threatening source of trauma.

Black women in our communities are forced to navigate a healthcare system that is not designed to serve them. Black women are three times more likely than white women to die from or experience pregnancy-related complications like postpartum hemorrhage or low birth weight.

All parents deserve to bask in the joy of bringing new life without fearing that their pregnancy will turn into tragedy.

It’s no surprise that the lack of quality healthcare is one of the leading causes of negative maternal and infant health outcomes after childbirth.

But even with programs like Medicaid, there are significant gaps in our healthcare system that disproportionately impact Black women.

Many lose Medicaid coverage after the postpartum coverage period ends and do not have the means to continue paying for the services they and their families need to stay healthy.

So Team Monica is proud to see our Supervisor tackling these issues with her recent appointment to an ad hoc committee to increase Medi-Cal reimbursement rates. She is working to make sure everyone has access to not just healthcare but good and quality healthcare.

We must center the lived experiences of Black people who have experienced childbirth in San Diego County to inform real, lasting change in Black Maternal Health.
