2X Match for Giving Week |
|
Tuberculosis (TB) used to be one of the most feared and deadly diseases in the
world. Around the time of our founding in 1904, TB was one of the top three
leading causes of death in the United States.
Today, TB is virtually nonexistent in the US thanks to a legacy of persistent
advocacy and support for our efforts. The American Lung Association’s 120-year history is full of milestones made possible by the passion of scientists and
donors like you who support lung health.
This week is Giving Week, and you can make more lifesaving breakthroughs possible by making a donation of $120 in honor of our 120th Anniversary today. No matter how much you give, your impact will go TWICE
as far thanks to the staff at the Lung Association who are matching all donations, up to $50,000.

How we ended TB |
|
|
In the early 20th century, TB was the leading cause of death in the U.S. To control
it, the Lung Association was founded as the first voluntary health organization in the United States.
Our work was first funded thanks to a volunteer named Emily Bissell who had
the idea to sell special holiday seals for a penny each. Thanks to her, and a
group of dedicated volunteers who helped sell the seals nationwide, in 1921, we
began funding research that led to medications to treat and prevent TB.
