Dear John
This weekend’s retaliatory attack on Israel by Iran underscores the profound danger of militaristic policies and the ongoing war in Gaza. As NIAC's president Jamal Abdi told MSNBC yesterday, the risk of further escalation and a wider war remains incredibly high.
But as we brace for a potential Israeli response, mindful that even Biden Administration officials fear that Netanyahu seeks to drag the U.S. into a wider regional war, hardliners on all sides are mobilizing to take advantage.
Here in Washington, lawmakers are exploiting the moment to force votes on a raft of Iran proposals – including a resolution pledging U.S. support for an Israeli military response, more broad sanctions that punish ordinary Iranians, and a ban on U.S. travel to Iran that undermines our own rights at home.
One of the core reasons NIAC has consistently opposed military escalation is that we know ordinary people pay the price and bad actors exploit war to consolidate their own power – from the Islamic Republic's renewed crackdown on mandatory hijab and political dissent under the new clouds of war, to Netanyahu's use of war to stay in office in the face of domestic opposition, to U.S. lawmakers exploiting this moment to target our rights and vilify peace activists.
In this disturbing environment, we need to come together. We need a Gaza ceasefire NOW. We need President Biden to finally say NO to Netanyahu and not allow the U.S. to be dragged into a new war of choice.
This week, we are mobilizing grassroots activists to join us on Capitol Hill for our Week of Action to demand peace. We may not be able to block all of these measures from passing, particularly in the House, but we can lay the groundwork to prevent them from becoming law – including by ensuring no travel ban passes the Senate.
To win the debate and block these dangerous proposals for good, we need as many lawmakers as possible to speak out and denounce them.
>> Will you take action to tell Congress NO war with Iran and NO banning travel to Iran?
Rest assured, we will be working overtime to reject this political theater, stand up against warmongers and safeguard your rights, including to travel to loved ones to see family.
Together, we can make our collective voices heard and demand an end to the militarism that threatens both the peace and security of millions and to erode our civil rights at home.
Thank you for your support.
