Today is Tax Day!

One of our agency’s main responsibilities is overseeing the state’s tax collection and refunding, so our team has been very busy lately – and as everyone sends in their tax returns today, we will continue to work overtime to process returns and send out refunds.

We’ve already processed over 1.5 million returns and paid nearly $1.5 billion in refunds!

The tax processing system I inherited is one of the oldest in the country, but we are working to modernize processes and systems. It won’t be quick or easy, but it’s essential that we move off a mainframe and into a secure, online system – so that’s what we are working to do in the coming years. We launched the Maryland Tax Connect Portal to make it easier for businesses to file online securely. From that launch, we’re learning how to make the transition for individual taxes more seamless and simpler. We have also increased our communication with taxpayers by launching a newsletter, hosting webinars, and this year, we’ll launch a new website!
