Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker recently published an op-ed in the Richmond Times Dispatch outlining GOP Governor Youngkin’s assault on women’s reproductive rights here in Virginia.
In it, she highlights Virginia’s status as the only remaining state in the South without an abortion ban. Democrats in the VA Senate recently passed a bill that would have prevented our Commonwealth from extraditing women who travel here to have an abortion from states where the procedure is illegal.
A recent poll conducted by NPR recently found that 84% of Americans reject criminalizing women who get abortions.
So why did Glenn Youngkin veto this overwhelmingly popular bill?
Since the overturning of Roe, women across the South have traveled to VA to access reproductive care. But Youngkin’s hostility toward these women only makes things worse.
As the last state in the South without an abortion ban, we should welcome and protect the women who come here to get the care they need — not put them at risk of being thrown in jail for getting basic reproductive health care.
The first step toward rejecting this anti-choice extremism and keeping Virginia blue is re-electing Tim Kaine to the U.S. Senate this November.
Tim has an important mid-month fundraising deadline coming up at midnight tonight. Can you pitch in $25 or more to help Tim build a Virginia that is safe for women?
