A MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL AMY L. SOLOMON

Two weeks ago, my OJP colleagues and I had the privilege of joining Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer and more than 700 community leaders and violence intervention professionals for the Second National Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative Grantee Convening [ [link removed] ].

This memorable and inspiring event brought practitioners and researchers to Chicago to network with one another and brainstorm strategies for reducing gun violence and interrupting cycles of victimization and trauma. The conference put a spotlight on the life-saving work being done in communities across the country, from New York to L.A. [ [link removed] ], and gave us the opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to our local partners, who work so hard, under difficult and often dangerous conditions, to reduce violence.

In this inaugural edition of our re-designed newsletter, which I'm very pleased to introduce, you can read more about the unprecedented investments we are making in community violence intervention programs and research. You will also learn about other exciting activities taking place across OJP, and you?ll continue to find information about funding opportunities, new publications, career options and other OJP items of interest.

*OJP Holds National Community Violence Intervention Conference*

On April 3-5, OJP brought together more than 700 community leaders, violence intervention specialists, law enforcement professionals, government officials and researchers for the second national convening [ [link removed] ] of grantees under the Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative [ [link removed] ]. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced $78 million to fund a third round of site-based [ [link removed] ] and research [ [link removed] ] grants, building on nearly $200 million in funding in 2022 and 2023.

*OJJDP Announces Awards to Provide Youth a Continuum of Care*

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Administrator Liz Ryan joined state and local officials in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on April 11 to announce more than $17 million in awards to foster positive youth development and advance community safety [ [link removed] ].






Second Chance Month [ [link removed] ]

*OJP Celebrates Second Chance Month*

Throughout the month of April, OJP joins reentry advocates, formerly incarcerated individuals and communities across the country in celebrating Second Chance Month [ [link removed] ]. This year's commemoration marks 15 years since enactment of the Second Chance Act, a major bipartisan achievement that has supported hundreds of adult and youth reentry programs

*OJP Goes to the Hill*

On March 26, OJP took its resources to Capitol Hill for an open house with congressional staff. Leadership and staff provided an overview of OJP's mission and activities to more than 60 legislative professionals from senators', representatives' and committee offices.

Speakers and presenters highlighted OJP's substantial community investments?$4.4 billion in fiscal year 2023 grants?and emphasized the bipartisan community safety goals shared by OJP and its congressional partners.

GRANTEE SPOTLIGHT

Royale King

Royale King, the Executive Director of the Tallahassee-Leon County Council on the Status of Men and Boys [ [link removed] ] which works in close collaboration with the Leon County Sheriff?s Office was one of the hundreds of CVI grantees to attend the CVIPI Conference in Chicago April 3-5th. While Mr. King's organization is only in its second year of operation, they are seeing positive change in their community. "The work we've done through our council has already begun to have a significant impact on the community, creating structure in areas that weren't there. We've been able to implement strategies to see reduction in areas where gun violence was really high," King stated.



Prior to his work with the council, King experienced the loss of two of his mentees to gun violence in his previous role as a mentor to at-risk youth. This tragedy fueled him to create a more data driven and research-based organization such as the Council to curb the rise in violence in his community. He?s taken wisdom from his own mentors and experience and said, "If not you then who? And if not now, then when? That?s what drew me to this work and I?m here."
