Red Flag Issued in Southwest Minnesota for Extreme Fire Risk

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 13 counties in southwest Minnesota, effective Monday, April 15, from 11:00 a.m. through 8:00 p.m. due to extreme fire risk conditions.

Affected counties include Brown, Cottonwood, Jackson, Lincoln, Lyon, Martin, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Rock, Watonwan, and Yellow Medicine

A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including strong wind and low relative humidity. Residents should not burn in those counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and should check any recent burning they may have done to ensure the fire is completely out. The DNR will not activate open burning permits for large vegetative debris burning during the Red Flag Warning, and campfires are discouraged.

High Fire Danger Predicted for Most of the State Today

Wildfire risk will remain high for most of Minnesota this afternoon. People should use caution as fine fuels such as grasses and leaves can dry out quickly in warm, windy weather and high winds can carry embers over a mile. Wildfires can start easily and quickly spread out of control in these conditions.?
