“We’re living in a dystopia. I’m hoping the Legislature will do something.

This is not what Arizonans want.”

Extremist Actions, Meet Consequences

When Republican politicians succeed in imposing draconian controls over our bodies, we must confront the harsh reality they've created.

This week's ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court, upholding a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban, shocks not only our state, but the nation and beyond. Originating from an era where the age of consent was 10 and championed by someone who at age 49 married a 15-year-old, this archaic ban pre-dates Arizona statehood, has no exceptions for rape or incest, and carries a 2-5 year prison sentence to those that aid or assist in terminating a pregnancy. Physicians, friends, and families will see the people they care for suffer and potentially die under this ban.

The deliberate path leading to this dire situation is evident. I fought against the 15-week abortion ban in 2022 and now doing the same on an even worse measure that was clearly written into that policy. On Wednesday, our Democratic attempts in the House and Senate to repeal the ban were thwarted by Republican maneuvers, revealing a calculated avoidance to fix the issue. Representative Matt Gress is now backtracking on lies he told after his theatrics to bring Representative Stephanie Stahl Hamilton’s repeal bill to a vote. It was an emotional moment of resistance on the House floor as I joined voices with my Democratic caucus to support those that are scared and struggling right now under the threat of this ban.

Abortion is an integral and necessary part of healthcare. Alongside the life and death impacts for pregnant people, are the institutional and economic repercussions we must think through.

  • How can medical professionals fulfill their duty to care for pregnant patients when essential services are criminalized?

  • How can medical schools maintain integrity in education without addressing such a critical aspect of healthcare?

  • How will Arizona attract businesses and talent under such extreme policies?

  • And why would individuals choose to relocate to a state where their very lives are endangered?

Since Wednesday, I've engaged with constituents who share my rage and disbelief in this. Together, we vow to hold those responsible accountable through our voices, our dollars, and our votes. As I return to work at the legislature this week, I reaffirm my commitment to fighting this egregious government overreach. Democrats stand as champions for health and safety and we stand determined to repeal this antiquated abortion ban and ensure the well-being of all.

In this together,

Sarah
