While on the campaign trail, President Biden promised that he would end the use of solitary confinement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — but we’re still waiting.

Despite the United Nations’ warnings that prolonged solitary confinement is psychological torture, thousands of detainees in ICE custody are in solitary confinement right now.

Conditions are inhumane: detainees are isolated in tiny cells for as many as 22 hours a day, banned from interacting with other people, and often with no end in sight. Some detainees are held for months or even years.

It appears conditions are getting even worse — rates of mental health conditions have spiked by over 20% of detainees in solitary confinement in just one year. The United States government must uphold its commitment to human rights and end this brutal practice.
