Dear John,
Those who fear they can’t win at the ballot box without disenfranchising the disadvantaged have long sought to make voting more difficult for those with fewer resources.
Voter suppression strategies have ranged from literacy tests to voter ID requirements, from limiting the number of voting locations available to requiring proof of a “need” to vote by mail.
Having had enough of voter suppression, Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia has introduced the Right to Vote Act to create the first-ever federal guarantee of the right to vote for U.S. citizens.
This bill will empower voters to go to court to challenge any actions taken by state or local governments to make voting more difficult. The state would have to prove there was a legitimate purpose to the restriction and that this action was the least restrictive way to accomplish that purpose.
It’s crucial for us to protect the sacred right to vote for all U.S. citizens. Congress must pass the Right to Vote Act to secure this right for future generations. Click here to sign on as a grassroots co-sponsor today!
In Nevada, signatures are being gathered today to put some of the nation’s strictest Voter ID laws on the ballot. These ID laws would have the most harmful effects on Nevada’s youth and people of color. Similar laws have recently been passed in other states across the country.
For the first time, the Right to Vote Act would establish a statutory right to vote in Federal elections, protecting every eligible voter from laws like the proposed Nevada measure that make it harder to cast a ballot.
As Senator Jeff Merkley said announcing his co-sponsorship of the bill, “The ballot box is the beating heart of our democracy.”
We cannot take the right to vote for granted, and we cannot allow it to be eroded by unnecessary restrictions. Become a grassroots co-sponsor of the Right to Vote Act today!
Thank you for taking action today!
