John, school vouchers and taxpayer-funded subsidies for private schools are currently being considered almost half of state governments nationwide. Private school voucher schemes were historically leveraged by racists who hoped to undermine school desegregation. Their resurgence is now putting the quality and funding of our public schools at risk.
Conservatives are using these programs, under the guise of expanding "parental choice," to divert funding from essential public institutions to private ones lacking accountability, transparency, and equity.
Republicans are trying to dismantle the public education system. America's children, the future of our economy and our communities, deserve a high-quality public education system. We cannot allow the interests of a few to undermine the educational rights and opportunities of the many..

South Carolina is one of many states that's become a hotspot for GOP efforts to divert public school funding. Republican lawmakers there are looking to expand an "educational scholarship trust fund" that would rip $90 million in funding away from public schools and widen the educational opportunity gap. This "fund" would also require the removal of income caps and eligibility restrictions, further prioritizing private interests over the public good and financial need.
And who's surprised? Texas Governor Greg Abbott is in on this too. He's already targetted his fellow Republicans who oppose vouchers. In Georgia, Senate Bill 233 was passed, showing a dangerous policy shift towards the privatization of education funding. This bill, which grants families $6,500 a year in state funds for private schooling, shows that some state governments have entirely abandoned their commitment to providing good public education.
