John,
I recently had the opportunity to sit down and talk to the Philadelphia Inquirer about my time in the State House and the importance of inclusive representation.

I didn’t set out to make history in Pennsylvania’s Capitol. If you had told me on my swearing-in day that I was going to be Speaker, I would have laughed because it just wasn’t something that even seemed possible.
When I was first in the Capitol, I was shocked to see what the makeup of the body looked like… how many men there were, how many people had been there serving for a very long time, and how few people looked like me. It was frightening and overwhelming, but I had a realization: I've been a public defender, so I know how to fight hard. I was a youth minister at my church, so I know how to serve, how to organize, and how to be reliable. I needed to stop selling myself short.
Some of my colleagues started urging me to run for House Democratic Leader, and at first, I was not on board. They said to me, “If you don't run, we’ll never have a woman leader anytime soon.” That struck me, the reality is it’s so hard for women to break through to leadership, and I decided to run.
This is so much bigger than me. It's more about what we can accomplish, what we can get done for the future, what we can do to improve lives today, and, most importantly, how this will open up doors for many more women and people of color who will come after me and serve in even higher roles.
I may be the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, House Democratic Leader, or House Democratic Caucus Chair — but I’m going to make sure that I am not the last. John, will you make a donation to my campaign today to support a reflective legislature and uplifting women in power? [[link removed]]
