Dear John,

We just closed the books on the first quarter of the Election Year, and we have a lot of great news to share! Scroll down to read details and see photos for everything from our polar plunge in Cayuga Lake (brr!) to our travels around NY-19 to reports that my opponent has been pretending to be Mary Poppins online (seriously!).

But here’s my favorite highlight from Q1:

Last week, we submitted nearly 9,000 signatures to appear on the ballot in November. That’s about six times the amount required. Volunteers across the district knocked on doors, talked to voters, and built momentum for this campaign. That’s what Democracy is all about–people talking to each other about the challenges we’re facing and our ideas for addressing them, together. I especially enjoyed my time knocking on doors in my hometown and chatting with folks about our campaign. Folks here have been looked down on and sold out for too long. I’m running for Congress to change that.

This campaign is a team effort, and I’m grateful to be in the fight with you.

PERSONAL UPDATES

Patricio and I had a fun night out to catch a Cornell hockey game.

We had a fun family outing at Ithaca’s Fire & Ice Festival.

Monica and I got breakfast at Union Diner in Endwell.

We played shuffleboard. (I want a rematch.)

Monica and I supported the Special Olympics by participating in this year’s Polar Plunge in Cayuga Lake.

We celebrated Easter, and Mateo found his first Easter eggs.

ON THE TRAIL

I was proud to support State Senator Lea Webb as she launched her re-election campaign in Binghamton. She’s working hard and delivering results. We need to re-elect her. Learn more about Lea and support her here.

I joined local leaders in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in downtown Binghamton.

We met with voters at a Christmas tree farm in Delaware County.

I joined the Broome County Democratic Women for dinner in Vestal.

I joined Congressman Paul Tonko to rally volunteers in the Capital Region.

I participated in the Broome County Democratic Committee’s leadership meeting to talk about our path to victory in 2024.

We were honored to support the NAACP at their annual gala in Binghamton.

I spoke with voters in Sullivan County.

I met with voters in Oneonta – thanks to SUNY Oneonta Democrats for organizing.

I participated in a get-out-the-vote event in Athens.

I met with voters at a diner in Schodack.

I participated in a roundtable discussion with SEIU workers in Hudson.

I enjoyed happy hour with friends in Hudson.

I joined a petition launch party in Ithaca.

I stopped by the Broome County Democrats’ Jefferson Breakfast.

I met with voters in Norwich.

I knocked on doors and spoke with voters in West Endicott.

I met with Binghamton Young Dems.

CAMPAIGN HQ

Our campaign has earned additional endorsements as we continue to build a winning coalition. I’m honored to have the support of 1199SEIU, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, CWA, BradyPAC, the New York State Nurses Association, and the Jewish Democratic Council of America.

We outraised Marc Molinaro–again. In January, campaign finance reports became public for the fourth quarter of 2023, and they showed that we outraised Molinaro by $250k in that period. That means we have outraised him in three consecutive quarters (every quarter that we’ve been in the race).

Then, earlier this week, we reported having raised nearly $1.4 million in our first quarter of 2024. I’m especially proud that we had over 2,500 in-district contributions and, as always, not a single penny of corporate PAC money.

In the category of just plain weird and creepy, we learned that Marc Molinaro has been pretending to be Mary Poppins online. As the Daily Beast reported, Molinaro has been linked to a social media account for the magical nanny, which he has used to spread lies about abortion rights, hurl insults at constituents, defend himself, and, of course, attack me. With all the big challenges we’re facing as a country, it’s disturbing that this is how Molinaro has been spending his time.

IN THE NEWS

Local press covered my visit to Chris’ Diner to talk with voters while my opponent was across the street raising money with Speaker Mike Johnson. Voters told me that they are opposed to the Marc Molinaro-Mike Johnson agenda of restricting abortion rights, cutting Social Security, and giving big tax cuts to big corporations.

I published a column in Tompkins Weekly after Mike Johnson’s visit to our district. Marc Molinaro has said voters here don’t know or care who the Speaker of the House is, but the truth is that we do know, we do care, and we want change.
