President Biden and Vice President Harris just took a huge step to making us all safer from gun violence: closing the gun show loophole. 

Please, take one minute to read about what this means – and why we're asking you to talk about it with your friends and family.

Before this week, only people who sold guns from actual gun stores were required to conduct background checks before selling someone a weapon. This left a huge gap for people selling guns online or at gun shows. Those sellers weren't required to check if they were selling those firearms to people previously convicted of a criminal offense.

But now, as of yesterday, anyone who sells guns to earn a profit must be licensed and must conduct background checks. 

This new law will impact over 23,000 people who are currently selling firearms without a license – and it will save lives by keeping tens of thousands of unlicensed guns every year out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them.

Advocates for gun violence prevention have been trying to close this loophole for over a decade. Now, thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration, we've made this huge step toward all being safer. 

Here is our important ask for you:

We know that, for many people, the November election feels very far away. A lot of folks aren't paying attention, or are trying to tune out politics.

It's on us to share with our friends and family what President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats across the country are doing to make our lives better, our nation safer, and our future more progressive. 

That's why we're asking you to talk to the people in your life about how important this achievement is. President Biden and Vice President Harris have passed the most comprehensive legislation to address gun violence in decades. Their work will keep more guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them.

And please connect this achievement to why it’s so important to vote in November. Re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris will protect the progress we've made over the last four years, and will help us continue to build a future for our nation that is more just, more equal, and more safe.

There will be voters who only you can reach. That’s why this is so important, and why we're asking this of you.
