John, in order for me to tell you exactly why your donation today is so important, I want you to consider this scenario:

You’re a battleground state organizer for President Biden or one of our Democratic Senate campaigns, and it’s Saturday morning.

The field office you work from was an unoccupied retail space until quite recently, in a local strip mall with plenty of parking. (You know the type — the “Spirit of Halloween” pop-ups in non-election years).

The office is jam-packed with folding tables and folding chairs, campaign literature, clipboards, cell phones, and laptops for volunteers to make calls recruiting other volunteers or contacting voters.

Your day starts by “cutting turf,” where you log into the voter contact database and pull up a map with registered Democrats and Independents scattered across local neighborhoods.

Clustering about 70-100 doors in geographic locations that are as concentrated as possible, you send the files to the office printer to collect reams of paper to be loaded onto clipboards, as you hope that the weather holds up and that most of the dozen volunteers who responded to your texts or phone calls saying they would show up to canvass don’t change their minds.

You hope that everyone has pleasant interactions with the voters they speak with so they continue volunteering in the weeks to come, and that you get responses from at least one-quarter or one-third of the voters your volunteers are contacting.

After your volunteers show up, you do a quick training with a volunteer who has never canvassed before to show how these interactions are supposed to go. After you’ve paired up volunteers and sent them off, you begin making your next round of confirmation calls for the afternoon canvass and make a few dozen additional volunteer recruitment calls for the weekday evening phone banks. Most of the calls go unanswered, with a few disconnected lines, but you do have a handful of conversations and get a couple of commitments for 3-hour weekday phone banking shifts.

If your volunteer team ends up having conversations with 250 voters, and Sunday’s team has conversations with 250 more, you’ve had 500 face-to-face conversations in a weekend — the most impactful form of voter contact across TV ads, texts, phone calls, everything.

Your efforts, multiplied out over the next 30 weekends between now and election day, equal contacting about 15,000 voters.

In 2020, Arizona was decided by 10,457.

Georgia was decided by 11,779.

Wisconsin by 20,682.

I wish we were in for a blowout victory, but the truth is that this election is going to be incredibly close. And in critical battleground states, our ground game is going to be the difference between winning and losing.

The longer we wait to fund these voter contact efforts, the less of a difference it will make in November — and based on the 2020 results above, every vote is going to matter.

I’m committed to traveling to as many battleground states as I can to rally volunteers at the phone banks and door-to-door canvasses that are going to win this election, but I need your support. Can you chip in $3? [[link removed]]

Thanks to your support in 2022, I was able to travel to Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado, and New Hampshire to support my Democratic colleagues.

We met with campaign staff and volunteers and held rallies to jumpstart voter contact efforts like the one I described above — efforts that are happening in every state across the country.

Your support has a real impact. So before I let you go, I’m humbly asking you one last time:

Will you chip in to help me defend the Senate, reelect Joe Biden, and defeat Trump by ensuring that every one of our campaigns has the resources they need to win? [[link removed]]

This election is an all-hands-on-deck moment. Thanks for doing what you can to support our effort.

With love and gratitude,
