Friend,

Months ago, we asked you to show support for a federal rule that would get us as close as possible to universal background checks WITHOUT congressional action. Well, your efforts paid off.

The Biden Administration just announced that the new rule will take effect, which will CLOSE deadly loopholes in the current Brady Background Check System! Brady, grassroots activists, and supporters like you, friend, helped drive record public support for this finalized rule — so thank you!

With this new rule, tens of thousands of private gun sellers will have to become licensed dealers and conduct official background checks. This means that the deadly “gun show loophole” and “online sales loophole” that have been exploited for decades will be CLOSED, and countless lives will be saved. This is the biggest expansion of background checks since the passage of the Brady Bill over 30 years ago.

To date, the Brady Background Check System has blocked nearly 4.9 million prohibited gun transactions . But with the rise of the internet and private sellers using gun shows to make a profit, 1 in 5 guns were being sold WITHOUT a Brady Background Check. That ends now.

Thirty years after the Brady Bill was passed, we are still emulating Jim and Sarah Brady’s commitment to saving lives, expanding on the foundational Brady Background Check System. This new rule, which was in part made possible by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, is a powerful example of the work that can be done when we take action, not sides.

Friend, this is proof that our voices matter and our efforts are working. We have the power to change this country for the better if we continue to advocate for the change that we know will save lives. Will you join us in thanking the Biden-Harris Administration for this life-saving rule that closes the “gun show loophole” and “online sales loophole”? [[link removed]]

[link removed] [[link removed]]

Team ENOUGH, Brady’s youth-led initiative, just opened applications for its Youth Advocacy Training Program in California! The Advocacy Training Program is the only national, youth-led program that trains and mobilizes young people to meet with lawmakers and push for critical gun reform measures.

We’re seeking youth (ages 13-26) to become changemakers in California, but they must apply BEFORE the deadline on Friday, April 19, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Know a young person who might be interested? No experience is required! Members will participate in valuable, hands-on training. Then, they will take those skills straight to the halls of power, urging lawmakers to pass gun violence prevention legislation, and pushing back against dangerous policies.

With gun violence as the leading cause of death for youth in America, it’s vital lawmakers hear directly from young people on this issue. Please share our application with a young person you know who is ready to get off the sidelines and take action to end this epidemic! [[link removed]]

You’re invited to join Brady for the screening of Jeff Vespa’s newest documentary, “Columbine 2024: 25 Years of Trauma,” on April 16, at the Center for American Progress (CAP) in Washington, D.C.

April 20 marks the 25th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School that killed 12 students and one teacher and injured dozens more. Jeff’s documentary follows a Columbine teacher, Kiki Leyba, and his wife, Kallie Leyba, as they grapple with loss and trauma in the aftermath of the shooting. The documentary serves as a reminder of the impact of mass violence on individuals and communities while offering hope for healing and reconciliation.

After the screening, Jeff, who is also a Brady Regional Leadership Council member, Kiki, and Tom Mauser, the father of Daniel, a victim of the Columbine shooting, will discuss the documentary, the impact of Columbine, and gun violence in America. 🎧 Episode 146: On Survivors Surviving (From the Archives)

Tuesday, April 16, marks seven years since the shooting death of Robert Godwin Sr, the father of Brady Human Resources Director Brenda Haymon. On Easter Sunday while out on his routine walk, Robert was confronted, shot, and murdered by a stranger. To compound this senseless horror, the shooter recorded Robert’s murder and uploaded the footage to Facebook. Robert left behind 10 children, 14 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

As we remember Robert, we’re revisiting a podcast from the archives to discuss the process of surviving after gun violence and loss. Hosts Kelly and JJ are joined by three of Robert's children, including Malisa Godwin, Tonya R. Godwin-Baines, and Brenda Haymon.
