A reader wrote to me to add, "The whole time, LGBTQ+ people and their families (including my own) have been calling and meeting with their legislators to make this a real issue for them, which has had an impact even in deep Republican central Nebraska."
"...It's crucial to show LGBTQ+ readers that it's the long, unglamorous work behind the scenes that builds the foundation for changes like this. Most people either think they can't have an impact, or that all they need is one good speech... but our community needs to see what effective change-making looks like so they'll start having those behind-the-scenes conversations."
