The surveillance boosters in Congress are at it again, and they’re showing us exactly why we need Justin Amash in the U.S. Senate.
The U.S. House of Representatives today passed a bill to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA 702) for two years—a law that, despite its name, is used to collect and search private communications and other information of American citizens.
The government collects and searches your information without a warrant—in violation of the Fourth Amendment—and anything they happen to find can be used against you.
The bill will soon head to the U.S. Senate, where constitutionally minded senators could still influence the outcome.
Justin’s two main opponents in this race—Mike Rogers and Elissa Slotkin—both have deep ties to the intelligence community, and it’s no mystery how they’d vote as senators on whether to continue this unconstitutional surveillance.
Justin will defend your rights. The other candidates in this race will not. And their records prove it.
<[link removed]>Donate <[link removed]>The public has known about the unconstitutional abuses in this program since at least 2013, if not earlier. Yet time and time again, both before and after those public revelations, Mike Rogers not only supported reauthorizing this program without reforms that would protect your rights, but he was actually its biggest booster in Congress!
<[link removed]>And as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Rogers knew exactly how the program works. Even after leaving Congress, Rogers has bragged about how much he knew about U.S. surveillance programs and how closely he worked with the intelligence community.
Just watch the video above—you won’t believe how little regard Mike Rogers has for your rights and your privacy.
And there’s no discernible difference between Mike Rogers and Elissa Slotkin when it comes to the Fourth Amendment.
Just today in the House, Elissa Slotkin voted against an amendment to require a warrant to search FISA 702 data for Americans’ communications!
The amendment failed on a 212-212 tie. If Elissa Slotkin valued your privacy, she could have been the deciding vote in its favor and ensured the government needed probable cause and a warrant to search your private data—as the Constitution already demands.
But instead she then went on to vote for the underlying bill to extend this unconstitutional surveillance for two more years!
Privacy? What privacy?
Meanwhile, Justin led the charge in the House to protect Americans against unconstitutional surveillance and other privacy violations. Justin introduced legislation to stop these abuses and voted against the bills that authorized them.
<[link removed]>Donate <[link removed]>There are a few people in the Senate who actually care about the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. But if they can’t stop this bill and it becomes law, FISA 702 will be up for reauthorization again in the next term. In two years, Congress will have another opportunity to amend this program and ensure your rights are protected.
Who do you want to be in the Senate when that opportunity comes?
We deserve better than Mike Rogers and Elissa Slotkin—two candidates who have shown nothing but disdain for liberty and the Constitution.
Let’s elect better by supporting Justin Amash for Senate.
Help make it happen by donating today <[link removed]> and voting for Justin Amash on August 6—and again on November 5!
