CAPITOL CAMPUS UPDATE
DES investigating leak in underground chilled water line over the weekend
**Where: **Area between the John L O'Brien Building and the Legislative Building.
*What's happening: *DES is investigating the cause and exact location of a leak in the main underground chilled water line that provides cooling to eight Capitol Campus buildings.
DES believes the leak to be underground between the John L. O'Brien Building and Legislative Building.
*Impact: *Over the weekend, people will see DES employees and contractors in the area wearing bright orange vests as they investigate.
The chilled water system is seasonally shut down every year during the winter and tuned back on May 1, though it can be turned on sooner if weather is unseasonably warm. Chilled air will be unavailable to those buildings until the repair is made, but we do not expect unseasonably warm weather in the next few weeks. If needed, DES will adjust building systems to bring in more outside air in the mornings to offset potential impacts.
If you experience discomfort related to temperature, please call the DES Work Management Center at 360-725-0000.
*Next steps: *Once the leak location is found, DES will hire a contractor to fix the leak. DES does not yet have an estimated timeframe for repairs.

Background
Chilled water is used to cool eight buildings on the Capitol Campus. The water is chilled in the 104-year-old Campus Powerhouse and carried to the buildings through an aged underground pipe system.
