Donald Trump and Senate Republicans are using this crisis as an opportunity to give their big business friends a free pass on polluting.

In a letter put out last week, the EPA said that power plants, factories, and other companies won't be obligated to meet environmental standards that keep our air and drinking water safe. You read that right: In the midst of a global pandemic that is attacking our lungs, Trump decided to cut back on air quality standards.

Why? Because Donald Trump and Senate Republicans care more about corporate profit than the health and safety of Americans. Right now, Joni Ernst should be fighting to keep us safe. But so far, she's remained silent.

Usually, companies are required to report their pollution of the air and water. But thanks to Trump, the EPA has effectively told companies that they're responsible for monitoring their own air and water pollution during this time. Are we really okay with polluters policing themselves?

What's more, the EPA won't hold polluters accountable if they break the rules. No fines, no penalties, and no oversight. This could be catastrophic to our environment and our health.

We need Congress to act swiftly and stop Trump's disastrous ideas and negligence from hurting us any further. We need strong environmental protection to keep us, our water and air, our health, and our planet safe.
