DeWine family views the solar eclipse
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, First Lady Fran DeWine, and members of their extended family watched the solar eclipse from a boat on Indian Lake.

Lt. Governor Jon Husted and Second Lady Tina Husted viewed the total solar eclipse at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton.
The path of totality for the 2024 Great North American Eclipse stretched from Mexico to Canada, passing through 14 states. It marked the first time since 1806 that Ohio has witnessed a total solar eclipse.

In honor of the life and service of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Lt. Husted to Visit St. John's Lutheran School in Marysville for EdChoice Roundtable
Lt. Governor Husted, the Second Lady, and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen Dackin participated in a roundtable discussion at St. John's Lutheran School in Marysville with families and school leadership to highlight how the Educational Choice Scholarship (EdChoice) Program is benefitting Ohio families.

In honor of the life and service of former State Senator C.J. Prentiss, Governor DeWine ordered [ [link removed] ] the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Cuyahoga County and at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes Tower from sunrise to sunset on the day of her funeral, April 13, 2024.

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Dackin announced [ [link removed] ] 171 Ohio schools are receiving the Purple Star designation [ [link removed] ] as members of the Purple Star Class of 2024. Purple Star schools show a significant commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation’s armed forces. Ninety-seven new Ohio schools received the esteemed award for the first time, and 74 schools earned a renewal after three years as dedicated Purple Star schools.
“Ohio is a leader in its support to military families, and the Purple Star program is a wonderful example of how this support extends to children in our schools,” said Governor DeWine. “I applaud Ohio’s Purple Star schools and thank them for supporting military-connected students and ensuring they have the services and learning resources to succeed.”

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz announced [ [link removed] ] that the Ohio Wildlife Council has voted to remove the trumpeter swan from the state’s threatened species list. The delisting culminates a 28-year effort by the ODNR Division of Wildlife to restore a population of trumpeter swans in Ohio.
Ohio’s trumpeter swan population today stands at nearly 900, with swans nesting in 26 different counties.
“Ohio’s professional wildlife biologists dedicated themselves to growing the trumpeter swan population over nearly three decades, and their perseverance has paid off,” said Governor DeWine. “In addition to monitoring the growth of the trumpeter swan population, a great deal of work also went into creating and restoring wetland habitat needed for generations of trumpeters to nest and thrive.”

Governor DeWine recognized [ [link removed] ] Ohio's 2024 Teachers of the Year during his State of the State address on April 10.
"A good teacher has the power to fundamentally change the course of a child’s life," Governor DeWine said during his address. "I’m sure that each of us can recall at least one great teacher who inspired us or motivated us and really changed our lives."

Governor DeWine announced [ [link removed] ] the initial communities in 11 counties that will be served by Family Connects, a visiting nurse program, and its partner organizations. This evidence-based program will begin this summer with the goal of serving 4,000 families.
Family Connects will offer all new families within the geographic areas selected a nurse home visit around three weeks after the family brings their baby home.
“Family Connects will allow Ohio to offer support to every new mom and family right after they come home with their new baby, to answer questions or address concerns they may have, as well as connect them to any clinical or community support they need,” said Governor DeWine. “Similar programs have a proven track record of reducing infant mortality. In places where these programs have been implemented, rates of child protective services investigations have decreased by 44%, and mothers showed a 30% drop in postpartum depression and a 50% reduction in emergency room visits.”
