Friends and Neighbors,
?
In our ongoing effort to keep you informed and engaged with the legislative processes that affect our daily lives, this week?s newsletter addresses several key issues that have surfaced at the Capitol. It's vital that our community understands the implications of recent legislative actions and the steadfast efforts being made to represent our rural values and needs. Specifically, this week we?ll touch on the Elections Omnibus Bill, ongoing struggles in education funding, and a bipartisan Public Safety Omnibus bill.
This past Tuesday the majority brought forth another *partisan Elections Omnibus Bill* that has sparked controversy due to its provisions that we believe could compromise the integrity of our electoral process. Key aspects of this bill include not allowing provisional ballots and allowing same-day voter registration without requiring a verifiable, concrete address. These changes raise concerns about the potential for errors and fraud, risking the sanctity of our vote.
*House Republicans proposed several amendments aimed at safeguarding our elections*?measures grounded in common sense and the protection of every citizen's voting rights such as limiting early voting and implementing guardrails on absentee ballots. Unfortunately, these amendments were voted down on multiple party-line votes. It is our commitment to continue advocating for election laws that ensure fairness, accuracy, and transparency, so every Minnesotan can trust in the legitimacy of our electoral outcomes.
However, in a positive turn of events, this same Tuesday *we successfully passed a bipartisan public safety bill*?a testament to what we can achieve when working together for the common good of all Minnesotans. This critical piece of legislation was crafted with the input and support from members of both parties and does not include controversial measures such as gun control.
Finally, I?ve been hearing from local leaders that our *education funding is still in trouble*. Despite last session's passage of "historic" funding for our schools, many of our local districts continue to face significant budget shortfalls. The root of this issue lies not in the amount of funding provided but in how it is tied to numerous new mandates. *Each and every dollar of new funding is tied to a new mandate*, leaving little room for local districts to address their unique challenges and priorities.
It is clear that a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for every school district across the state. It?s time for reform - we must advocate for greater flexibility in how schools can use state funds to ensure that resources are being utilized effectively to benefit our students and teachers.
?
*On The Radar:*
As mentioned above, we successfully passed a bipartisan public safety bill off of the House Floor last week that contains no gun control._ _However, as I?ve said in the past, no bill is ever ?dead? here and we expect at least one more public safety bill before the end of session ? Things change fast in the Legislature, and often without warning, so I?ll be keeping an eye on this until we finally adjourn for the year next month.
