New Democrat Coalition Trade Task Force Chair Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) and New Dem Rep. Brittany Pettersen (CO-07) co-led the introduction of the Pink Tariffs Study Act ([link removed]) , legislation to examine the prevalence and impact of “pink tariffs,” which may directly contribute to women paying more for everyday goods than men, including everything from razors to clothes.

Traditionally, gender bias in the consumer goods space has been referred to as the “pink tax,” which occurs when companies charge a higher price for women’s products than similar men’s products. However, there is evidence that import taxes, also known as tariffs, may directly contribute to women paying more at the register than men.

The Pink Tariffs Study Act would require the Department of the Treasury to conduct and report to Congress a study on potential gender bias and regressivity within the U.S. tariff system. This legislation has been endorsed by the NDC Trade Task Force and the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

The New Democrat Coalition Climate Change and Clean Energy Task Force, led by Chair Scott Peters (CA-50), issued a statement on the Biden administration’s announcement ([link removed]) of eight applicants selected to receive $20 billion to implement a national financing network for clean energy and climate solutions.

“To reach our nation’s climate goals and build the clean energy economy of the future, every community must have access to the affordable financing needed to implement transformational projects. That’s why New Dems fought to create the historic Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund through the Inflation Reduction Act.

“The grantees announced today will mobilize $7 of private capital for every $1 of federal funds, financing tens of thousands of projects to reduce pollution and energy costs while strengthening public health and creating high-paying jobs across the country. And with more than 70 percent of the funds announced today dedicated to disadvantaged communities, the Administration is ensuring no community is left behind.

“New Dems look forward to continuing our work with the Administration to deliver on the promise of the Inflation Reduction Act, confront the climate crisis, and create a clean energy economy that benefits every American.”

Following New Democrat Coalition Chair Annie Kuster’s (NH-02) announcement ([link removed]) that she will not seek re-election in 2024, lawmakers from across the Capitol applauded Chair Kuster for her tireless work to deliver for her constituents and the American people over her 12 years of service in Congress.

New Democrat Coalition Vice Chairs Sharice Davids (KS-03), Derek Kilmer (WA-06), Brad Schneider (IL-10), and Salud Carbajal (CA-24) issued the following statement ([link removed]) on New Dem Chair Kuster’s decision to not seek reelection in New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District:

“Since joining Congress and the New Democrat Coalition over a decade ago, Chair Kuster has worked to build a better future for her constituents and for Americans across the country. When too many in Washington are a part of the problem, she’s always been a part of the solution.

“From helping champion the largest mental health and gun safety legislation in a decade, to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the CHIPS and Science Act, Kuster has made an incredible and lasting impact.

“Getting things done in Washington is not easy – far from it. However, Annie made it her mission in Congress to approach every day with radical hospitality and a willingness to work across the aisle to deliver real results. Her belief that we can find common ground on even the toughest issues facing our nation to make lives better in every community is why she’s been such a successful New Dem Chair.

“While we are sad to see her go, we look forward to working with her every single day for the rest of this Congress to finish the job for the American people. From delivering critical aid to our allies in Israel and Ukraine to expanding the Affordable Connectivity Program for communities nationwide and advancing comprehensive immigration reform, Annie will continue to steer the ship for the New Democrat Coalition.

“While there is so much more work that remains, on everything from clean energy deployment to mental health and childcare, we are confident that under Annie’s leadership this Congress, New Dems will continue leading the way. It’s been an honor to have her as Chair, and we look forward to continuing our work with her to deliver for Americans and ensure Democrats hold the gavel in 2025.”
