Rep. Nelson

Friends and neighbors,?

I hope you?re enjoying the beginning of this lovely spring weather. In Saint Paul, the Minnesota House continues to pass major issue policy bill packages, building on the work of our historically productive 2023 session.?

NELSON

?

On Monday, we passed an elections policy bill [ [link removed] ], which focuses on improved voter access and election transparency. It targets policy areas where the state can improve voter turnout and ensure that if voting is restricted, voters have a means of redress. We also passed a?public safety policy bill [ [link removed] ]. The bill continues House Democrats? comprehensive approach to public safety and crime prevention with support for victims, criminal justice reform, policy modernization, and more.?

Last week, we passed a?higher education policy bill [ [link removed] ]?that includes the clean energy sector in our Workforce Development Scholarship Program and expands support in higher education for students who have a disability. We also passed an?early education policy bill [ [link removed] ]?focused on strengthening our pre-kindergarten and school readiness programs.?

We also passed a?transportation policy package [ [link removed] ]?that improves road safety, adopts safer speed limit recommendations, shortens Driver Vehicle Services wait times, and includes child passenger safety and consumer protections.?

Just last night, we passed a?labor policy bill [ [link removed] ], which will improve working conditions, strengthen worker protections, and address pay inequality.?

In the coming weeks, this work will continue. I?ll be sure to keep you updated as we pass more policy packages to improve the lives of Minnesotans. ?

Tax Day is April 15

This is your final reminder before Tax Day on Monday. Last year, DFLers made big moves to help working families, and you?ll feel some of the benefits this year as you file your 2023 taxes.???

If you?re a renter, don't forget to claim your property tax refund! This is the first year renters will be able to receive their Renter?s Credit with their tax filing rather than later in the year. Along with making it simpler and more convenient, we also expanded the credit to many Minnesotans who didn?t qualify previously.??????

I also want to remind you that nearly 300,000 Minnesota households are eligible for the nation-leading Child Tax Credit! With our Child Tax Credit, families will save up to $1,750 for each dependent. Democrats are cutting child poverty by one-third with this rebate. You can claim the tax credit by filing a 2023 income tax return. The $1,750 credit is for each child 17 years old and younger, with no limit on the number of children. For all tax filers, this credit begins to phase out at an income level of $35,000 and fully phases out at a maximum of $90,750 for a family with four children. Minnesota families: If you qualify, file your taxes to make sure you?claim the benefits available to you. [ [link removed] ]??

Additionally, if you are eligible for the Renter?s Tax Credit or the Homestead Credit, you must mail in your relevant form [ [link removed] ] to receive your refund. Starting next year, this extra step will be eliminated and your refund will be packaged in with your full return. However, for the 2023 tax year, don?t forget to submit for your refund. ?
