John,

Thriving forests and a thriving economy need not be mutually exclusive. That's why I’m excited to tell you about a 5-year-project Washington Conservation Action (WCA) officially launched to build a climate-smart wood economy in Pierce, County WA!

What is climate smart wood? It turns out that not all lumber is created equal. How we manage forests has a profound impact on our climate and our communities. Which is why we are collaborating with Pierce Conservation District to connect climate-smart wood producers, namely small forest landowners, Tribal Nations, and community forest managers, with local mills, wood manufacturers, and downstream buyers who seek climate-smart wood products.

This project is supported by a $25 million USDA Climate Smart Commodities grant and includes seven other partner organizations with a shared vision: to expand climate-smart forestry across the Pacific Northwest and to increase access to and recognition for the benefits of climate-smart wood products.

At the end of March, we held an official launch event in Portland, Oregon to kick off the project as well as celebrate the more than two years of hard work that have gone into developing this ambitious program. We are excited for the opportunities ahead and are proud to lead on the ground efforts to improve forest health, mitigate climate change, and prioritize environmentally just economic development for local communities.

Thank you for supporting our work! We look forward to sharing future updates with you as we continue to build momentum for climate-smart wood in Washington. If you are interested in learning more about the larger project, you can do so here [[link removed].].

Thank you for all you do,
