Petersburg

Hello from St. Paul,

?

Next week, the House will be looking to finish their committee work on their omnibus finance bills as the legislative deadline to have bills heard in committee is Friday.

?

Recently we?ve been debating a number of comprehensive omnibus proposals on the House floor. I will tell you a comprehensive election policy bill that was approved solely by House Democrats on April 8 will do nothing to strengthen our state?s election system.

?

The argument can be made that this bill actually makes it easier for people to vote illegally, and that billionaires can spend money in Minnesota to influence our elections.

?

For example, there?s a new provision that allows voters to describe where they?re living while filling out a voter registration form rather than listing an actual address. In other words, a person can basically say they?re living in the yellow house near 5th Avenue and be good to vote. It?s ridiculous and opens the door to potential voter fraud.

?

The House majority also shot down efforts to prevent private grant money from being used to help conduct elections. In 2020, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made a $300 million donation to a liberal group that had the stated goal of providing voter access, money which many believe was ultimately used for partisan voter turnout. Since then, 28 states have banned this dark money influence, but Minnesota House Democrats weren?t interested, opposing a measure that would have done just that.

?

House Republicans tried to offer amendments that made things more transparent and improved election integrity. Provisions that would have prevented nonprofits that receive government funds from spending that money on political campaigns were also blocked, as were initiatives that would have brought more security to our election system. Every option was thwarted.

?

Elections bills are supposed to be bipartisan. In the end, not one Republican voted for this very one-sided bill.

?

There was also little Republican support for a labor proposal that came through as it will make life difficult for small business owners. The Democrat plan would raise the minimum wage on employers of all sizes, making them choose between laying off staff or close their doors. Ultimately, those costs will be passed on to the consumers and employees.

?

Again, with most committee work wrapping up in the coming days, there will be more time spent on the House floor debating bills over the remaining few weeks. I will keep you posted.

?

Have a good weekend,

?

John
