Dear John,

As I’ve written to you about recently, the Republican Study Committee’s (RSC) budget plan for fiscal year 2025 calls for devastating cuts to Social Security and Medicare, while expanding massive tax cuts for the wealthy and huge corporations. Aside from the callous cuts to your earned benefits contained in their plan, there’s also a troubling reference to the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) …

The RSC budget implies making the Social Security COLA discretionary — meaning Congress and the President decide if and when COLAs are provided — not automatically as they are now as a part of a mandatory program.

The RSC budget suggests the COLA should be lower than current CPI-W but unlike their previous budgets, they don’t specifically say they would implement the chained CPI. What the RSC would do to the COLA would most likely hurt current beneficiaries.

Please sign our EMERGENCY PETITION TO CONGRESS today and tell your U.S. Representative that freezing or eliminating the Social Security COLA amounts to a benefit cut — and seniors will not accept any cuts to our earned benefits!

If Republicans, 80% of whom comprise the Republican Study Committee, win a majority in Congress and gain a strong ally in the White House in the upcoming election, we are concerned they will try to attack Social Security by either reducing or eliminating the COLAs and claim they made no cuts to Social Security funding because benefits would essentially be frozen.

Most congressional Republicans claim that wouldn’t be an out and out “cut” but every Social Security beneficiary who would lose all or part of their COLA would certainly know it was a cut!

During this consequential election year, it’s extremely important that senior voters keep the pressure on our elected officials in Congress, many of whom are running for reelection in November, to protect — not cut — the benefits that retirees have paid into and earned during a lifetime of work. So please sign our petition today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
