Angus King

John, it’s Angus King,

The opioid epidemic has been one of the most challenging issues I’ve faced since taking office, and it’s also been among the most enduring. Overdose deaths claim one Maine life every day, and hundreds a day nationwide.

I’ve introduced and supported legislation to take on big pharma overprescribing addictive painkillers and put resources towards treatment to help those recovering get back on their feet. But there is still much more to do.

We know that treatment can help our friends and neighbors who are struggling with substance use disorders enter recovery, but there simply aren’t enough resources to provide the appropriate treatment.

Last year I introduced the Life Budgeting for Opioid Addiction Treatment (LifeBOAT) Act, which would make critical investments in our nation’s treatment facilities, allowing us to open up more beds, hire more treatment professionals, and take a long-overdue step to save lives.

Of course, tackling prescription drugs is only part of the solution. Unfortunately, when folks lose access to prescribed painkillers, they often turn to fentanyl — which is readily available on the streets. While prescriptions are most often the source of addiction, fentanyl accounts for the majority of overdose deaths. That’s why I support the FEND Off Fentanyl Act to crack down on fentanyl coming into our country illegally, which we passed in the Senate, and is now stuck in a House of Representatives that refuses to act.

John, I was elected to address issues that affect Maine lives and families across the country. No matter what political party you belong to, we should all be able to come together around the issues that affect us all – and do something about them! As long as I’m in the Senate, I will continue to work with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle to build a stronger tomorrow.

– Senator Angus King

There is nothing more important to Senator King than doing right by the people of Maine. This means fighting on their behalf for the issues that matter most, whether that’s health care, national security, veterans, education, economic certainty, the environment or job creation.
