Happy Friday from #OneUtah, a weekly update from the office of Gov. Spencer J. Cox. Here’s your recap of what we did this week, what's on the horizon, and more. Reply to this email with any questions or suggestions regarding the newsletter. And thank you for subscribing! ([link removed])

** A heartfelt thank you
------------------------------------------------------------

This week First Lady Abby had surgery to remove degenerative discs in her neck. Our family is grateful to the surgeons, doctors and staff at the University of Utah Hospital for their attention and care, and we deeply appreciate the prayers and support from so many Utahns.

We are happy to share that the first lady is doing well, and on her way to a speedy recovery.

** Getting closer to another Winter Olympics
------------------------------------------------------------

The Olympic legacy is alive and well in the Beehive State, and we’re one step closer to hosting the 2034 Winter Olympic Games!
This week, Lt. Gov. Henderson welcomed the International Olympics Committee Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games alongside SLC-Utah Bid Committee president Fraser Bullock, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, and other Utah leaders. They discussed how Utah’s transportation, hotels, venues and – mostly importantly – people are ready to host the world. The IOC will announce its pick on July 24, and we can’t wait! ** Future Generations Bill Signing
------------------------------------------------------------

Each legislative session we work on bills that improve the lives of future generations because we’re a family friendly state, we care about our children, and we care about our education and our future.

Thank you to the University of Utah Bennion Center for hosting Lt. Gov. Henderson, legislators and stakeholders to ceremonially sign important bills related to school safety, increasing parental leave for our teachers, creating a student-teacher stipend, launching the One Utah Service Fellowship, protecting kids from abuse and more.

** A new state monument
------------------------------------------------------------

This week we ceremonially signed SCR 6, the Golden Spike State Monument designation. The Golden Spike recognizes the connection of the east and west coasts, the determination of the people who labored to create the Transcontinental Railroad, and Utah’s unique place in history.

Thank you to the Legislature, Brigham City officials, Doug Foxley and the Golden Spike Foundation for making this monument a reality. Utah is the Crossroads of the West!

** 12th Annual Governor’s State of Sport Awards
------------------------------------------------------------

Utah is the ‘State of Sport!’ From outdoor recreation to participatory sport to our professional sport teams, Utahns love to compete, to support, and get out there!

Some of our state's most prominent athletes attended the 12th Annual Governor’s State of Sport Awards at the Delta Center. The event celebrated Utah's top Olympians/Paralympians, high school and college athletes, coaches, and events from 2023. The cherry on top was hearing from tennis legend John McEnroe.

Thanks to Lt. Gov. Henderson for hosting and presenting the Legacy Award with Utah House of Representatives Speaker Mike Schultz to Kem Gardner. See photos of the event here ([link removed]) .

** #DisagreeBetter
------------------------------------------------------------

The things that unite us as Americans are far greater than those that divide us.

In our latest #DisagreeBetter ad, we were joined by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore to talk about why it’s important to respect each other and have healthy conflict.

** Governor’s Award for Excellence Highlight
------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we’re highlighting a state employee who was recently awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence. This week we’re recognizing Aleta Sumner with the Utah Department of Financial Institutions.

Aleta has played an instrumental role in helping the Department achieve its mission of credibly regulating Utah’s financial institutions. Her dedicated work has helped ensure that the citizens of Utah have reliable access to safe financial services, thereby promoting stability, confidence, and fairness in the financial lives of Utah consumers. Aleta began her career with the Department in 1985 and quickly established a reputation as a gifted examiner. Aleta can be trusted to plan, lead, and complete any type of examination, regardless of the institution’s size, complexity, or business model. She is a team player and mentor who shares her expertise to lift others. As a Senior Examiner, Aleta has been entrusted multiple times to serve as the dedicated Examiner-in-Charge at large banks subject to the Department’s jurisdiction. Aleta’s work ethic has helped build strong relationships with federal regulators. She is an outstanding public servant and a great person to work with.

Thank you, Aleta, for your dedication to the state of Utah. Keep up the great work! To read about the Governor’s Awards for Excellence, click here ([link removed]) .
