Dear John,
In case you haven’t seen already, we teamed up with illustrator Nafisa Ferdous to create a bold new design for tees, totes, and more around the statement “Reproductive freedom is a human right.” This special product line is still available in our online merch shop—extended by popular demand!
We had the opportunity to chat with Nafisa about her process as an artist and activist. We hope you find her answers just as inspiring as we do! You can read them all on our Instagram. Here's an excerpt:
1. How do you think art fits into the realm of activism, and what is the artist’s role?
Nafisa: The artist's role is to BUST OPEN silos, doors, windows and gates. To invite people into movements. To imagine radical futures. Art is an invitation to shift our thinking and hearts about complex questions and problems in the world.
2. Can you say something about how you approached this project with Ipas?
Nafisa: I think reproductive freedom has to be intersectional, has to break binaries, and has to focus on systems change in order for everyone to enjoy bodily autonomy, full reproductive rights, and access to high quality, affirmative and affordable care. I really wanted the visual imagery to be diverse, joyful, and showing movement - because it IS the movement for reproductive justice (aka all of us, the people, organizations, scholars, funders and activists) that have the collective power to make that world possible.
Now more than ever, we need advocates like you in the U.S. (and beyond!) to be loud and proud with your support. Please check out this special product line in our online shop—and share with your friends.
