Dear John, This week I reached out to members of Congress and the U.S government to share lessons learned from the trial, in New York, of the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted, in March, of drug trafficking and firearms offenses. Hernández was backed by the U.S throughout both his presidential terms.
In an explainer written with the Central America team intern Jorge Paz Reyes, I outlined the specific legal and institutional reforms that need to take place in Honduras to dismantle the narco-state.
Also this week, in a video on El Salvador, WOLA President Carolina Jiménez Sandoval analyzes the risks for countries in Latin America seeking to adopt Nayib Bukele’s model of security. She offers human rights based alternatives for addressing violence in the region. All this and more in this week’s WOLA Weekly. |
