Like most of our food system, the dairy industry has been consolidated as bigger and bigger companies have merged with each other and bought out smaller businesses. It is now dominated by just a few big players.
The only people who benefit from this system are the corporate executives of massive dairy cooperatives. Small farmers get squeezed out, and everyone winds up with more pollution.
Mega-dairies use unimaginable amounts of water and pollute local waterways. They’re a major contributor to Oregon’s nitrate pollution crisis and take a harsh toll on people’s health, the environment, and the economy — and they need to be stopped.
Since 2017, Food & Water Watch and our coalition partners have called on Oregon to place a moratorium on mega-dairies, and in 2023, we expanded that call to all factory farms.
As part of the Stand Up to Factory Farms coalition, our Oregon team worked with local activists to talk with community members, organize volunteers to make phone calls, send letters, speak at local hearings, and ensure that the most impacted community members had their voices heard.
There is still more work to be done in Oregon to stop factory farms and mega-dairies for good, but we’re celebrating each step forward along the way.
Food & Water Watch Volunteer Leader Claire and our Factory Farm Organizing Manager Mikindra talk about protecting Oregon communities from factory farm pollution and giving local people more control over where factory farms are built.
Because of activists like you, we can win stronger regulations on factory farms across Oregon and the country to protect communities and our shared environment. Thank you.
Check your email tomorrow for the final “How We Organize” story.

P.S. Our work is never over. We must keep our food safe. You can help change how your food is grown by joining the movement to ban factory farms! Tell your members of Congress to support the Farm System Reform Act. The Farm System Reform Act is the bold national approach we need to bring factory farming under control.
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
