Yesterday marked the start of Black Maternal Health Week – an annual week of awareness and activism dedicated to deepening the conversation about Black maternal health in our country.

Here in Maryland and across the country, Black women face higher mortality rates during childbirth than their White and Hispanic counterparts.

As a proud member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, I’ve co-sponsored the reintroduction of the Momnibus Act, historic legislation to save moms’ lives and address every driver of maternal mortality.

This November, Marylanders have a chance to vote 'YES' on the Reproductive Freedom Referendum, enshrining the right to abortion access and contraception in our State Constitution.

The opportunity to codify abortion rights is critical as restrictions on access to reproductive care and an increase in cases of criminalization due to pregnancy loss continue to widen the gaps of adverse maternal and birth outcomes across the nation.

Together, let’s codify abortion rights here at home, and in the Senate, I will fight tooth and nail to codify reproductive rights on a federal level as well.
