Dear Friend,
Good news! This week, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability voted 41-1 to advance the Federal Prison Oversight Act. This important procedural step primes the legislation for a vote on the House floor!
This urgently-needed bill will bring comprehensive independent oversight to all 122 federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities. Each facility will receive in-depth inspections, and incarcerated individuals and their families will have access to an official public advocate who will investigate individual complaints against the BOP.
For too long, the BOP has operated with little to no transparency and accountability despite incarcerating over 150,000 people to the tune of $8 billion. This is unacceptable, and we’re glad to see Congress taking steps to correct this wrong.
We will keep you updated as this bill advances through Congress! In the meantime, please consider making a special gift to FAMM in honor of this achievement: [link removed] [[link removed]]
Thank you for your continued support!
