Dear Friend --

Last week, Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) led ten fellow senators in sending
an urgent message to the Trump administration: Ease economic sanctions
against countries where those restrictions are seriously hampering the
response to COVID-19 -- specifically Iran and Venezuela.

“Helping these nations save lives during this crisis is the right thing to
do from a moral perspective, but it is also the right thing to do from a
national security perspective,” Senator Murphy and his fellow senators
wrote.

At J Street, we agree. That’s why we’re proud that Sen. Murphy will join
us on Tuesday, April 7 at 1pm EST for an online briefing on this urgent
topic. Following remarks from the senator, the International Crisis
Group’s Ali Vaez will speak with J Street's Director of Government Affairs
Debra Shushan about the situation in Iran and how modifying the current US
sanctions regime could help save countless lives.

The Iranian government’s malicious actions have had a destructive impact
for many in the Middle East -- and among those who have suffered most are
the Iranian people themselves. Now, with Iran emerging as the epicenter of
the crisis in the region, the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening to turn
into a humanitarian catastrophe for 81 million Iranians who have little
say in how their government is run.

At this critical moment, stringently-enforced US sanctions are impeding
Iranians’ access to critical resources, including medical supplies, and
making relief efforts much more difficult. That’s why J Street and other
progressive foreign policy groups have joined with Sen. Murphy and dozens
of other lawmakers in the House and Senate to request an easing of
sanctions, as has been enacted in previous times of crisis.

Now, with so many people suffering in the region and across the world, is
the time to act on our values. [ [link removed] ]Please join us on Tuesday at 1pm as we
discuss this urgent issue with Senator Chris Murphy and the International
Crisis Group’s Ali Vaez.

Best,

Logan Bayroff
Director of Communications
