Republican politicians are in turmoil following Trump’s amorphous announcement earlier this week that abortion bans should be left to the states.

His former vice president Mike Pence called it a “slap in the face.”

The president of an anti-abortion group said, “We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position.”

But let’s be clear — Donald Trump appointed the three Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe v. Wade . His MAGA Republican allies in Congress want to pass a national abortion ban. No matter what he says as he tries to back away from the consequences, we know his actions : the reproductive freedom crisis in America started because of him.

While the GOP argues with itself about the consequences of its extreme position on abortion, Democrats have an opportunity to unify and set the stage to hand Trump and the GOP a massive defeat — and in turn restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land. We’ve won every election since Dobbs where abortion has been on the ballot, and this November, it’s nationwide with the presidential election at the top of the ticket.
