Sister District has just completed exciting new research in partnership with Data for Progress exploring Democrats’ biggest challenge – and biggest opportunity – to turn out the most critical votes all the way down the ticket. The results of this research are fascinating, giving us deep insights into which voters do, or don’t, vote down-ballot – including important communities such as women, voters of color, and young voters.
“Roll-off” is the term used to describe the behavior when a voter ticks the top, but not the bottom, of their ballot. We have been investigating this issue for some time, and have already discovered a stark difference between the parties, with Republicans much more likely to vote all the way down the ballot than Dems. This partisan gap can make all the difference in state legislative races, which are often decided by just a few hundred or thousand votes.
We wanted to better understand who rolls off their ballots, and what strategies could get them to vote all the way down the ticket. Working with Data for Progress, we conducted 5 focus groups with voters, and then fielded a survey to 5,101 likely voters in the critical battleground states of AZ, MI, NC, PA, and WI. This briefing will cover the results of these focus groups and voter survey; research which is the first of its kind.
The briefing will be led by Sister District Co-Founder Gaby Goldstein and Head of Research Jillian Evans, alongside Isa Alomran, Lead Analyst at Data for Progress. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.
