350 Eastside is supporting the work of Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (WANW). On Thursday, April 18th in Issaquah, we will be in front of the Issaquah City Hall from 3:30 to 4:30 to meet with the public and talk about how our tax dollars are being spent. We hope you stop by, we would love to meet you. Below, is a link for EarthDay2TaxDay events, organized by WANW; click on the link to learn more about events happening in this region in honor of Earth Week 2024.
Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (WANW) is the only statewide coalition that aims to reduce and eliminate all components of the 2 trillion dollar rebuild of the US nuclear weapons arsenal. Our ultimate goal is to prevent nuclear war and abolish nuclear weapons worldwide. Founded and coordinated by Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, WANW's primary purpose is to build a nuclear weapons abolition movement powerful enough to sway our state leaders and congressional leaders to take meaningful action around peace, arms control, nuclear justice, and nuclear weapons abolition while redirecting the resources for these weapons of mass destruction towards the needs of working people.
The Sunrise Movement is planning to hold a teach-in (semi-rally/workshop) at Rep. Kim Schrier’s office in Issaquah (1445 NW Mall St #4, Issaquah, WA 98027 (https://www.google.com/maps/search/1445+NW+Mall+St+#4,+Issaquah,+WA+98027?entry=gmail&source=g)) on April 19th @ 4-5pm for Earth Day. We are asking Representative Kim Schrier to call on President Biden to Declare a Climate Emergency. We would love your support for this event. It would be great if you could support us by recruiting for this teach-in! Please share information about this action with your email list and on your social media!
If Biden declares a climate emergency it will allow him to use his executive powers to create good union jobs, end the fossil fuel era, and protect our communities from disaster. For example, Biden would be able to:
• Hal crude oil exports
• Use the full power of the DPA (Defense Production Act) to create green jobs that expedite the transition to renewable energy
• Stop Oil and Gas Drilling and private investment in Fossil Fuels
• Update OSHA rules to protect delivery drivers, restaurant workers, and farmworkers who are enduring increasingly deadly heat each summer
• Use the Public Health Services Act to provide free healthcare to people affected by climate disasters and ensure equitable access to care post-disaster, and to ban eviction and utility shutoffs in the aftermath of climate disasters

From Earth Justice: Call to message Pete Buttigieg Studies show that U.S. gas pipelines leak as much as 2.7 million tons of methane into our atmosphere each year. That’s the same impact as roughly 50 million passenger cars.
|
It’s unacceptable. But it’s also a problem we can fix. The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has a proposal that will help find and fix more leaks — but it’s already well behind schedule. That’s why we need to act fast and urge PHMSA to put their plan into action.
|
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and PHMSA can lead and deliver on this win for climate and safety by directing his agency to finalize the rule this spring. Send a letter and show your support for stronger community safety and climate protections!

Gas pipelines are a significant source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas more than 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Methane fuels extreme weather across the country by immediately trapping heat in the atmosphere. It’s a big problem, but also a big opportunity. Cutting methane emissions now is the best, most cost-effective way to slow the rate of climate change happening now. That’s why we need to act fast.
|
With protective standards for leak detection and repair, we can hold gas companies responsible, improve community safety and curb climate emissions at the same time. And PHMSA’s proposal is a big step in the right direction. If adopted, the Advanced Leak Detection & Repair Rule will require regular surveys for repairing pipelines, ensure more detailed reporting, incorporate modern technology into leak detection programs that will find and fix more leaks, and extend these protective standards to cover an additional 70,000 miles of pipelines.
|
To meet our nation’s climate goals, and protect the health and safety of our communities, we need to put a stop to gas line leaks. Tell DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg and PHMSA Deputy Administrator Tristan Brown to swiftly adopt this proposal.
